At Global Law Attorneys, we proudly assist young immigrants, known as Dreamers, in securing protection under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. DACA provides certain undocumented individuals who were brought to the United States as children with temporary protection from deportation and the ability to work legally in the U.S.
What is DACA?
DACA is a federal immigration program that grants temporary deferred action status to eligible individuals. While it does not provide a direct path to permanent residency or citizenship, it offers relief from deportation and access to a renewable two-year work permit.
Who is Eligible for DACA?
Applicants must meet specific requirements, including:
Entered the U.S. before turning 16 years old.
Continuously lived in the U.S. since June 15, 2007.
Were under 31 years of age as of June 15, 2012.
Were physically present in the U.S. on June 15, 2012, and at the time of applying.
Currently enrolled in school, graduated, obtained a GED, or are an honorably discharged veteran.
Have no significant criminal convictions.
Benefits of DACA:
Protection from deportation for two years, renewable.
Authorization to work legally in the U.S.
Ability to apply for a Social Security number.
Access to certain state-level benefits like driver’s licenses (depending on the state).
Opportunity to pursue higher education and stable employment.
DACA Renewal Process:
Renewal applications must be filed every two years.
Applicants must continue meeting all eligibility requirements.
Timely filing is critical to avoid gaps in protection and work authorization.
Current DACA Updates:
Initial (first-time) DACA applications are currently not being processed due to ongoing court rulings.
Renewal applications are still being accepted and processed by USCIS.
Policy updates and changes are possible depending on federal court and government decisions.
