UK Biometric Residence Permit

What is the UK Biometric Residence Permit (BRP)?

A Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) is an official document issued by the UK Home Office that contains both biographical and biometric data of its holder. It serves as reliable proof of a person’s immigration status, identity, and eligibility to study, work, or access public services in the UK. Applicants do not usually need to apply for a BRP separately—it is automatically issued in most immigration processes.

Who Receives a BRP?

You will typically be issued a BRP if you:

  • Apply to stay in the UK for longer than 6 months.

  • Extend your visa beyond 6 months.

  • Apply to settle permanently in the UK.

  • Transfer your visa into a new passport.

  • Apply for specific Home Office travel documents.

⚠️ Applicants who use the “UK Immigration: ID Check” app to prove their identity will not receive a BRP; instead, they will be given a digital immigration status.

Information Displayed on a BRP

A BRP card contains important details, including:

  • Personal information – your full name, date, and place of birth.

  • Biometric data – fingerprints and a facial image.

  • Immigration status – type of visa held and any conditions attached.

  • Access to public funds – confirmation of eligibility for benefits and healthcare services.

  • A National Insurance (NI) number may also be included on the back of the card, although not all BRPs have this.

If your BRP does not display an NI number and you need one for employment, benefits, student finance, or voluntary contributions, you must apply for it separately.

Validity Period of a BRP
  • A BRP is generally valid for the same period as your visa or leave to remain.

  • The maximum validity is usually 10 years.

Benefits of a Biometric Residence Permit

Holding a BRP provides significant advantages, such as:

  • Serving as proof of your right to live in the UK.

  • Making it easier to prove your identity at any time.

  • Assisting employers in verifying your right to work in the UK.

  • Simplifying access to services and entitlements, including healthcare and education
